HYCAT SWIMMING
Whether
your child wants to be a competitive swimmer, swim for conditioning or is
trying something new, swimming is a sport they can do for the rest of their
life. Our team is not only fun and challenging but provides an opportunity for swimmers
to become more proficient in the water.
Competition is available at the YMCA level for all swimmers with the
exception of the developmental groups.
Competition is only required
for Junior, Pre-Senior and Senior Teams.
All
practices take place at the Marshall Univ. pool. Group levels are assigned by the coaching
staff after a brief tryout.
Group Levels:
Beginner
Developmental & Developmental Groups :
(Non-Competitive)
These groups are for children who are interested in the
swim team, but are not quite ready. The
basics of freestyle and backstroke are taught as well as some basic water
skills. The goal of this group is to prepare the child to “graduate” onto the
Red Team. The groups will be limited 5 swimmers per instructor. An experienced
swim coach will be in the water with the swimmers. The Beginner Developmental
group practices 1 day per week for 30 minutes.
The Developmental Group practices 2 days per week for 30 minutes.
The minimum
requirements for this group:
*child is at least 5 years old
*child is not afraid of the water
*child can go under water and blow
bubbles
*child can swim for short distances

groups are extremely limited, please call to reserve a spot**
Red Team: (competition optional)
The Red team is the beginning level of the HYCAT Swim
team. This group will work on the basic
skills of freestyle and backstroke and will work on small amounts of butterfly
and breaststroke. They will also begin to
work on the competitive dive and flip turn. The coach will spend a minimal
amount of time in the water and instruct the majority of practices from the
pool deck. Maximum group size is 12 swimmers. This group practices 2 days per
week, 45 minutes per practice.
The minimum
requirements for this group:
*child is at least 5 years old
*child can swim at least one length
of freestyle with face in the water with some side breathing
*child can swim at least one length
of the pool backstroke
Blue Team (9 & Under)/White Team (10 & Over): (competition optional)
These groups will work on strengthening the swimmers
freestyle and backstroke skills as well as spend more time working on butterfly
and breaststroke. They will also
continue to work on the competitive dive and flip turn. The coach will instruct
practices from the pool deck. These groups practice 3 days per week, 45 minutes
per practice.
The minimum
requirements for these groups:
*child is at least 5 years old
(blue team), 10 years old (white team)
*child can swim several lengths of
freestyle and backstroke
*child can swim small of amounts of
butterfly and breaststroke correctly
*child can do a forward flip under
the water
Junior Team:
(competition required)
The Junior Team is for swimmers who are able to swim all
four competitive strokes correctly. This
group will continue to work on more advanced drills for all four strokes and
work on the swimmers strength and stamina in the water. The group will also continue to work on
starts and turns for all four competitive strokes. USA Swimming Membership is
required for this group. Members of this
group are also required to compete in several meets per season. Attending at least 3 practices per week is
strongly encouraged.
Pre Senior Team: (competition
required)
The Pre
Senior Team is for strong swimmers ages 11 & over. Swimmer must be proficient in all four
strokes. This group not only continues
to work on skills but will be working on endurance and stamina in the water
through repetitive sets on time intervals.
These swimmers are required to be members of USA Swimming. Members of
this group are also required to compete in several meets per season. Attendance at 3 or more practices per week is
required.
Senior Team: (competition
required)
The
Senior Team is the highest level of the team.
Swimmers are required to be 13 or older, highly skilled and active
members of

membership, your child needs a youth membership to participate.
